Hi! I’m Charlize. Nice to “meet” you…
I have two great loves: music and storytelling. My academic and professional endeavors often combine the two. I began my undergraduate studies at Cal Poly Pomona, starting with a degree in Communication with an emphasis in Multimedia Journalism. I started writing for my university newspaper as a freelance writer, then staff writer, Arts & Culture Editor, and finally, Editor-in-Chief. Eventually, I added a second degree in Music as I realized that I wanted to continue to be a band kid in college.
I believe that artists, especially musicians, discover a world filled with resources that foster personal growth and a community that draws strength in each other. With that, I believe that everyone has a right to access that “world.” Music, and everything that comes with it, is a human right.
As a cellist, I believe in the power of live music performance and consider myself as a live music evangelist, advocating for accessibility in the concert space. As a journalist writing Western classical music reviews of symphony orchestra and opera performances, I have a deep understanding of concert culture and the beauty and obstacles within it. Outside of music coverage, I often write profiles of anyone who is willing to talk to me. There is no merit scale. If I believe a person’s story will find its way to a heart of another’s, I write it. Every person should have the opportunity to tell their story (if they want to). As an arts administrator, I carry a passion to challenge traditional norms and advocate for wider representation so that musicians and composers from diverse backgrounds are rightfully and authentically represented.
My first love is the sound of an orchestra, and I endeavor to share that with the whole world.
